FCD (Fuel Cut Defencer) Module

The HKS FCD is a simple fuel cut adjusting device that wires into the loom near the ECU. Nearly all Japanese cars have a safety cut on the fuel supply if a higher than stock boost level is seen by the ECU, which consequently shuts the engine down. Hence, an FCD is usually always needed if a boost upgrade is undertaken (unless the HKS F-Con 5 piggyback ECU is used).

We must stress that an FCD is not a 'chip' as many people assume. Chips usually refer to a modified fuel and ignition map as would be expected on say, a Sierra Cosworth. Many people claiming to be selling 'chips' for Japanese cars are in fact selling variations of what is basically an FCD (but still charging a mapped chip price). An FCD does not provide any fuel or ignition adjustments.

The problem arises when customers run higher than acceptable boost pressures under the assumption that their 'chip' will look after all the ignition and fuelling needs.

In short, an FCD is a tool to enable the user to run more boost pressure up to a certain level. This level will vary from car to car but as a rough guide most Japanese vehicles will run happily on 1 bar (except RX7's). If more boost is to be used then a piggy-back ECU will be needed such as the HKS PFC F-Con or F-con 5. Hence, the FCD does not alter fuel, ignition or boost parameters itself, it simply raises the factory ECU's fuel cut point.

We would also like to point out that most of the Japanese tuning companies (including HKS) always use piggy-back type ECU's to alter fuel and ignition maps for high-boost use. Many U.K. tuning companies are now currently trying to re-map customers original ECU's, not always with the desired effect.
